The Legendary Anime Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included numerous filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a three-month break until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the visuals and let the comic to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver viewers with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with others alternatively covering more material or additional to compensate for scheduling.

This concludes of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and of course itself have so many side stories, and the quality of the art can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each year, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
