Matteo Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Genius in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had let in ten goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or had there never been any cohesion keeping it intact in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, only for him publicly stated that the club had not mentioned the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Reports that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic on the pitch as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other first five games, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it's been difficult to tell if progress is being made or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Return

One individual continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his owning club were pushing for him to extend his stay for another season. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to weaken their team with no new signings.

He joined originally when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was still trying to determine the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
