The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.
This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a document approving the custody, the judge said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
He was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which included plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.
The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. Lula was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.
The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The justices found that the protesters had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
